A Low Maintenance Garden

One of the few beautiful new builds built up in the Eden Valley that reflect the traditional surroundings but with a modern edge, a great symbiosis between the past and present. The garden, however was dated and the lawn more moss than grass, the clients reaching their seniority (but still looking great of course) were looking for a garden that was low maintenance, easy for them to traverse in all weather without getting muddy shoes and most importantly a patio large enough to entertain their family and friends. First point of order was the removal of the mossy turf and taking out the vast majority of the old and tired shrubs, especially those surrounding a particularly stunning Acer. Honey coloured calibrated patio slabs were then added along with a golden gravel both to highlight the sandstone cornerstones bedecking the property. A raised bed was constructed to allow for the cultivation of a herb and salad bed that could be cared for from the ease of a chair, and a curved seating area at the far left corner of the garden was designed to capture the early morning sun at breakfast. Both of these were constructed with local field stone and topped with reclaimed sandstone roofing tiles. The borders were filled with a stunning variety of super hardy perennials, grasses and climbers that will cope with anything our dreary winter weather can throw at us as well as provide colour and interest throughout the year. A tiny pond was then added along with native perennials such as Water Mint and Marsh Marigold, to provide a space for the local birds and wildlife. A truly enjoyable build, the hardest part of which was not having too many of the biscuits offered to me by the clients!
