A Many Layered Garden

This garden in a large semi-detached house in Highams Park near the beautiful Epping Forest was a mammoth task. The new owners of the property had inherited a large unkept garden filled with all kinds of debris. The access was extremely difficult, up a steep hill, through a very thin side shed and up two flights of very steep stairs it was probably one of the hardest gardens we have ever done in terms of sheer back breaking labour getting things in and out. A total of 6 large skip worths of waste was cleared from the property and over 25 tonnes of soil, mulch, sub-base, gravel and patio slabs were carted up the slope and two flights of stairs. plenty of space was left within the borders to allow for the owners' (who had never had a garden before) to experiment and learn the beauty of gardening. In the end we create a garden with three seating areas over three levels, with the lower terrace being a drought tolerant Mediterranean-style garden, gradually merging into an English and then tropical garden to emulate the cultural back grounds of the owners. In the end we are extremely proud of this garden and though our bodies may not agree, we very much look forward to revisiting the garden in a years time once the plants have established.
