Heritage Orchard

Previously a grazing pasture for sheep near the beautiful village of Dent in Cumbria, the new owners wanted a heritage orchard, planted specifically with local varieties of apples predominantly from Cumbria, Yorkshire and North Lancashire. We also planted, plums, medlars and damsons along with a wildlife belt of native trees further up the slope. Heritage orchards are so important not only for upholding the traditions and heritage of these wonderful local varieties (some of which are very close to extinction) but also to safeguard the genetic diversity of the species as a whole to mitigate against future diseases.

Having a heritage orchard with over 60 varieties of apples ourselves, along with many other fruits, we know first hand the benefits of an orchard both to ourselves, the community and to wildlife.

We are very excited to watch this orchard grow and will be back in a couple of years and update you with photos.
