A beautiful live edge Silver Birch charcuterie/bread board with bark intact. Originally a damaged branch of the main tree pruned due to it precariously hanging over the negihbouing fence of the client on one of our landscaping projects in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria.

It has been planed and sanded and sealed with Danish wood oil and a coating of food grade English Bees Wax.

Silver Birch is, in my opinion a massively unvalued tree in this country. Stronger and more stable than pine it has been used to make tool handles and childrens toys for centuries.

As a tree it is vital to the ecosystem, especially in the creation of forests and glades. a fast growing and short lived tree, its airy canopy allows light through to the ground whilst its strong roots break up hard soil preparing the ground for oak, beech and other hardwood trees. Its leaves and bark provide a habitat for obver 300 species of insect and it has beneficial myccorrhizal relationships with a plethora of fungi including Wooly Milk Caps, Penny Buns and Chanterelle.

  • Wood is a natural material liable to splitting and cracking under extremes and/or fluctuations in temperature and moisture levels. It is therefore imperative that you take care of these boards by reading the following:

    1. DO NOT scrub the boards at all or clean them with harsh chemicals or non-organic wahsing up liquid.
    2. DO NOT soak them or put them in the dish washer (it has happened before)
    3. Clean your board by either wiping it down with a damp cloth or using a tiny drop of eco-friendly washing up liquid with said cloth
    4. Re-wax your board occassionaly with a natural food grade safe bees wax to protect against food and water damage and to keep the natural colours of the grain from fading.
